Protecting Black Hair during the Winter

Frigid temperatures are ramping up in the Northern Hemisphere as the end of the year approaches. With this we all know, the colder the climate, the drier the hair. There are plenty of tips and tricks people can take to take care of and manage their hair during this time. Regardless of if your hair is in a protective style or flying free during the winter, here are some basic tips and tricks to help keep your hair flourishing during the colder months:

• Moisture is your friend - Keeping your body and hair hydrated is important to preventing dried hair and breakage during this time. Use various oils, creams, and sealants to keep your hair moisturized the way you would your skin.

• Use silk items - Using hair products such as silk scarves, pillowcases, and silk lined hats will help with oil retention while also keeping your hair from snagging or breaking on fabrics, especially cotton.

• Trim those ends - Don’t hold on to split or damaged ends during this time. This combined with dry hair will cause damage to travel up the top of the hair shaft if not cut/trimmed off. 

• Limit heat usage - It is encouraged to steam your hair during this time to add moisture into hair strands. However, other usages of heat items on hair can cause further dryness as flat irons and curling irons remove moisture when styling. If using a blow dryer, use the cool setting and a proper heat protectant.
