Black Influencer Spotlight V
Welcome to the fifth installment of the Black influencer spotlight with 3KINGS Grooming! This month we will spotlight two women making strides in the fashion and beauty industries. Let us know who you would like for us to spotlight next in the comments!
Aurora James is a Toronto, Canada born fashion designer and activist who got her start working as a journalist at Fashion Television for Jeanne Beker. This and her passion for telling stories through being a designer, she found her brand Brother Vellies in January 2013. In this journey towards finding her brand, she traveled to Africa and spent two years testing designs with different local artists. The Brother Vellies brand goal is to create new jobs for artists through workshops and to preserve the African shoemaking craft; this goal has allowed the brand to expand their efforts across the African continent from Morocco to Kenya, to South Africa. James also began her journey into activism through founding the 15 Percent Pledge charity in response to the murder of George Floyd and other protests around the United States. The goal of the charity is to call major brands to dedicate 15 percent of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses and brands.
Salem Mitchell is a California born fashion model, new to the fashion scene. Recognized for her prominent freckles and unique beauty, Mitchell admits she was once bullied for looking different from others. However, has used her confidence and strong social media following to start a career in modeling, which she excels in. Mitchell was scouted from Instagram, appearing in campaigns for Gap and Savage x Fenty and music videos for artists like Cardi B and SZA. She is also an advocate for the Black Lives Matter movement and discusses the various issues around cultural appropriation and beauty standards held against Black women.
