How Fashion Shapes Identity

How Fashion Shapes Identity

Identity is defined as “the fact of being who or what a person or thing is”. There are many aspects that help shape the identity of a person from culture, race, where a person grows up, economic status, etc. However one area that changes with time and can vary from person to person is how identity is defined through fashion. Let’s explore this further . . .

Fashion, in one way or another, can display a person’s age. Some love the designs, textures, and trends of a certain time period. Many also enjoy wearing specific items from their youth in their adulthood. In whatever sense of time a person feels their clothing should represent, there is always another person or persons who shares the same sentiment. Within today’s society, clothing often does not have an age requirement, mostly as long as the person wearing it is comfortable and decent to the public. In many cases, the fashion world today has repeated several trends of years past. Fashion eras and ages are something that never goes out of style.

With the varying levels of gender fluidity, fashion has helped others find their voice in showing who they/she/he really is. Gender norms through the typical pink and blue colors are no longer sought out in terms of fashion. Trousers and skirts are shifting from their “usual” wearers and more modern gender inclusion clothing is coming into the world. Either way, a person matches their tops and bottoms, fashion no longer follows gender norms from yester-year and allows for room for every person, men, women and in between, to feel their best and show themselves to the world.

Comfortability is also another important aspect of identity through fashion. Many choose their clothing and other fashion trends known or even unknown to their culture to help them feel comfortable in their own skin. Whether it is comfortability for the purpose of working, identity, or trends, finding what feels worth wild to each person is important to understanding who they are.

Identity through fashion serves as a great outlet for self expression. The freedom many feel through fashion to make statements via clothing is important to society and individuals. Throughout history, many fashion trends, designers, and brands have shown some form of a statement about historical eras. The search for self identity ultimately through fashion is what also helps more trends through time as well. With the need to express ourselves more and more, there is a sense of human connection, i.e. a sense of belonging - there is someone in the world who also feels the same as another person. In this sense of belonging, one person’s need for identity through fashion can be another person’s newest trend.

However self identifying a person’s fashion sense is, as long as the person is comfortable within themselves, they are serving a great purpose to the world.
