What is Nostalgic Marketing?

How often has a hit show or new streaming series tugged hearts with references from the 80s and 90s viewers love/loved so much? How many songs from the various eras have been played recently, making a comeback on the Top 100 boards?

Nostalgia is defined as “a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.” This feeling is now being used by major corporations, stream services, and studios to help gain viewership. Nostalgic marketing is benign used by brands and businesses to help associate a positive feeling with their brand in order to capture more audiences. Through these associations, audiences get positive feelings and ideas whenever the brand or business is discussed.

Although not a new concept, brands are especially targeting Millennials with this type of marketing as Millennials express feelings of having to deal with more negative feelings because of added stresses from work and overall life balance. Incorporating this type of marketing with the technology of recent and future times allows businesses to bring viewers down memory lane from the little screen at the palm of their hands.

Nostalgic marketing has made a great impact on various industries and will become a growing trend for years to come, as it has proved itself through viewership numbers and other studies.
